About Buy for Charity

The idea for Buy For Charity was hatched one November day in 2001 in a cramped apartment tucked in the hills of Calabasas, California...

Old college friends, Brian Freedman and Ryan Jordan, agreed not to leave the apartment until they came up with a business idea that would not only benefit as many people as possible, but would turn into something that they could be passionate about for years, even decades to come. Luckily for them, their self-imposed exile from the world was short-lived as they stumbled upon an article describing the large amounts of money being donated to 9/11-related causes.

The disastrous events of September 11th had just taken place and Americans were coming together in a way never before seen. The American people opened their pocket books and donated money at record highs to organizations involved in the relief effort. Although these donations were much needed, local charitable organizations around the nation began suffering from a lack of funding and an inability to raise new money.

Brian and Ryan realized something had to be done for these smaller charities. But what?

It was then that inspiration struck. Online shopping malls were just starting to spring up all over the Internet. Brian and Ryan began to leverage relationships with online merchants in order to allow customers the opportunity to shop for their favorite charities. Within a matter of months, the Buy For Charity Shopping Mall was born which allowed portions of the shopper’s purchases to go directly to non-profit organizations desperately in need of extra funding. Lo and behold; it worked! And Buy For Charity Fundraising was off and running.

Encouraged by the success of the online shopping mall, the Buy For Charity staff set out to discover new and innovative fundraising products they could offer their fundraising groups. In 2003, Buy For Charity Fundraising teamed up with Krazy Kard Fundraising, a supplier of fundraising pizza cards. Along with Krazy Kard, Buy For Charity started offering the pizza cards online, pioneering the effort to make pizza cards available nationwide through the Internet. In 2004, Buy For Charity acquired Krazy Kard and its database of thousands of participating pizza stores. For the past several years, Buy For Charity Fundraising has been one of the leaders in the pizza card fundraising business, selling hundreds of thousands of pizza cards annually to over a thousand different charities a year.
